Mantra Meditation and Healing

A sound is a powerful tool. The vibrations and waves generated due to the right kind of sound can heal the soul. Music, however, has always been there as a source of relaxation and peace. Music is also a type of sound. Our solar system creates a sound of AUM.
God is the master of the cosmic sound that causes the planets to adopt the elongated orbit to produce beautiful vibrations and music; also known as the music of the spheres. A great Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras also observed the heavens sounded one vowel down to our earth. The ancient sages from India also discovered the same conclusion. The pronunciation of vowels corresponds to the vibration of the five planets namely Venus (O), Jupiter (A), Saturn (E), Mars (I) and Mercury (U).

Our music reveals the essence of the universe. It is through music that we can reach God too. Great Saints like Kabir, Soordas, Swami Haridas are known for their soothing devotional songs and Music. Maestros like Baiju Bawra and Tansen were famous for their miraculous music. Their ragas were so powerful that can bring rain, make flowers bloom and light fires.
The power of sound, music and vowels are some great forces of this universe and us humans possess it. For centuries, our great spiritual teachers have taught mantras as a mean for harnessing such power. ‘Mantra’ is a Sanskrit words manas or mind, and trai to protect or to set free from. A mantra is a mental tool that can release us from our habituated ways of living and life circumstances.  The mantra is a tool to heal the problems that we face in our lives. Mantras can make our mind peaceful and bring energy in our body, heal us from illness. Transcendental Meditation which is a specific form of meditation technique developed by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi involves the use of mantras for self-development practised worldwide. Mantras are dynamic and nonviolent to deal with the conditions one wish to change.

The sound alters our mood and expressions still the main understanding of the mantras lies in the relationship between our physical body and spiritual being. It is our subtle body that penetrates our physical body with universal energy from which we human and all materials forms have ascended. Here, we would like to refer the chakra meditation which also uses sounds for various chakra points. Each chakra has a Bija mantra. For example, the root which is mooladhara chakra has a mantra sound ‘Lam’, swadhisthana chakra has a sound ‘Vam’Manipura Chakra has a sound ‘Ram’Anahata chakra has a bija mantra ‘Yam’Vishuddha chakra has a sound ‘Ham’Ajna chakra has a bija mantra sound of ‘Om’ and Sahasrara, the crown, has a sound of ‘Om’.
The Sanskrit word chakra means wheel, the energy centres, the dynamic whirling forces in our subtle body. Mantras work with chakras in many ways. It helps in clearing the blockages so that each chakra can function efficiently, restore health, improve living conditions and eliminate karmic conditions that may be hampering our lives some of the other ways. Mantras bring great energy from around us but somehow not available to the chakras. Chanting mantras is very effective to gather and activate the energy in our body and spirit.
Mantras are used to deal with the material concerns that people have in today’s world. We want to change or improve everything about our life; the lifestyle, values, career, income level, our financial needs and life transitions. Many people also want to manage their emotional stress. Here also, mantra practices help us gain the clarity we need to build our purpose of life.
