Guided meditation – What do we understand from it?

Meditation is a very common term today, but many Medical practitioners, psychologists, and meditative practitioners recommend people Guided meditation.
In simple words, guided meditation is the method to heal and rejuvenate with the combination of yoga and meditation. It also includes teachings and explanations from our great and ancient Scriptures with the help of audio-visual displays and meditation music, under the guidance of a trainer or master.
Guided meditation is of great help to collect and assimilate information and document it based on daily changes and effects person experiences. This helps to keep a track of the progress towards Nirvana.
In the process, a person experiences the power of visualization and self-realization, to recreate and rebuild Kosha. A Kosha usually rendered “sheath”, is a covering of the Self according to Vedanta philosophy. The five koshas envelop the soul like concentric rings, each more subtle than the succeeding one. Each kosha affects the activity of the preceding kosha. They are as following:
Anna-Maya Kosha – The food Sheath and includes five organs of perception, i.e., skin, ear, tongue, nose, eyes.
Prana-Maya kosha – The Air Sheath includes the five vital breaths of air that link to psychological functions of mind and body. In other words, they are named as 5 Pranas (Prana, Udana, Apana, Samana, Vyana).
Mano-Maya kosha – It is the mind sheath comprised of emotion, passion, feelings, thoughts, and desires. It is full of likes and dislikes and controls the vital air and food sheaths. Whenever the mind is disturbed then both psychological functions and physical body also get affected.
Vigyana-Maya Kosha – It is the Intellect Sheath and it is involved in thinking, reasoning, discriminating and judging. The intellectual Sheath analyses and distinguishes between a pair of opposites and controls all the above sheaths.
Anand-Maya kosha – The Bliss Sheath, consists of mental impressions in the form of a seed, also called vasana. When all your mental agitations cease then you experience a deep and peaceful sleep. This is another reason why this sheath is called ‘Bliss’ sheath.

DepressionPost-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Anxiety, lack of peace and calmness, lack of relaxation are some common issues that guided meditation can help address.  According to a clinical psychologist and Author, Michael D. Yapko, there is a remarkable similarity between hypnotic procedures and guided meditation procedures.
